William Hunter began his fascination with the bagpipes as a young boy while attending family Scottish picnics in Western Pennsylvania.  Later in life as a music educator and clarinetist he reconnected with his Scottish heritage and began attending Highland Games throughout the southeast.  Quite by chance in 1993 he had opportunity to purchase a classic set of 1890's John Center Great Highland Bagpipes and he began to learn the pipes at the late age of 50.  Mr. Hunter found his traditional music education helped his piping progress in many ways, but he also found that learning the  art of piping required some changes in his musical philosophy.

Being a music educator helped as he sought out the finest piping instructors available.  Mr. Hunter began attending the North American Academy of Piping in 1993-2008 and had lessons under Sandy Jones, Bill Cauldill, Greg Abbott, Colin Maclellan, Ed Neigh, and many other outstanding piping instructors.  In 2004 he attended the National Piping Centre Summer School at Shenandoah University where he studied with Roddy MacLeod, Gavin Stoddart, and Chris Armstrong.  As a member of EUSPBA, Mr. Hunter is a Grade 3 piper and has competed at many Highland games.  He has served as a Pipe Major for the Cullodin Pipes & Drums and the Mercer University Pipes and Drums.  Mr. Hunter is a former member of the John Mohr MacKintosh Pipes & Drums where he served as the piping instructor for their Grade 5 band and competed in the Grade 4 band.

Mr. Hunter has had opportunity to connect his piping with his more traditional high school band teaching experience.  Over the last few years he has performed as a piping soloist with Tara Winds Community Band, the Georgia Tech Symphonic Band, the Georgia College & State University Concert Band, the Reinhardt College Wind Ensemble, the University of South Carolina High School Honor Band, the University of Georgia Janfest, and numerous high school and middle school bands.  Each of these performances featured music written for the solo pipes with concert band and were well received by audiences.

Mr. Hunter will be happy to consult with you on your piping needs.  Appropriate tunes can be selected from his repertoire of pipe music to best suit your occasion.  For further information or to book an engagement call (478) 452-4070 or email hunter71544@yahoo.com
